Pumps for Sludge and High-Solids Media

Characterise solids, rheology and pipeline requirements before choosing a sludge pump.

State solids concentration by weight and volume, maximum particle size, shape, hardness, settling tendency and whether fibres or stringy material are present. Also provide slurry density, apparent viscosity or rheology data and temperature. The required line velocity must balance settling risk against wear and energy use. Include pipe diameter, length, elevation, fittings and start-up condition when calculating pressure. Centrifugal slurry pumps can suit continuous higher-flow duties. Diaphragm or other positive-displacement pumps may suit high pressure, variable viscosity or accurately controlled lower flow. The final choice depends on the complete duty and maintenance strategy. Specify wear monitoring, flushing, isolation and safe access as part of the system rather than treating the pump alone.
