1. Define the real duty point
Confirm the required flow and total dynamic head under normal, minimum and maximum operating conditions. Avoid selecting only from the nominal design point.
2. Describe the pumped liquid
Record temperature, density, viscosity, vapour pressure, solids content, corrosiveness and any hazardous properties.
3. Check suction conditions
Compare available NPSH with the pump's required NPSH and keep a suitable engineering margin. Review tank level, pipe losses and site elevation.
4. Select wetted materials
Choose casing, impeller, shaft and sealing materials against corrosion, erosion, temperature and cleanliness requirements.
5. Choose the sealing arrangement
Mechanical seal, packing or a sealless design should be selected according to leakage, emissions, maintenance and safety requirements.
6. Confirm driver and control
Check power supply, motor efficiency, hazardous-area classification and whether variable-speed control is required.
7. Review the whole system
A reliable selection considers the system curve, operating range, minimum continuous flow, pipework and future expansion—not only the pump curve.
